About Alzil-M
Alzil-M contains memantine hydrochloride, an anti-dementia medicine.
Alzil-M is used to treat adults with moderate to severe Alzheimer's disease.
How to use
Take Alzil-M once a day, at the same time each day, with or without food, exactly as your doctor has told you.
- The dose is raised slowly over the first 4 weeks: 5 mg a day in week 1, 10 mg a day in week 2, 15 mg a day in week 3, and then 20 mg a day from week 4.
- The usual maintenance dose is 20 mg a day. In people with moderate or severe kidney problems, the dose is 10 mg a day.
- Your doctor will check how well Alzil-M is working, usually within three months of starting.
Ask your doctor or pharmacist how to take the lower doses during the first weeks.

Side effects and warnings
Like all medicines, Alzil-M can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. The most common are dizziness, headache, constipation, sleepiness and high blood pressure.
- Do not take Alzil-M if you are allergic to memantine or any of the other ingredients.
- Tell your doctor if you have epilepsy or have had fits, kidney problems, a recent heart attack, heart failure or uncontrolled high blood pressure.
- Do not take Alzil-M with amantadine, ketamine or dextromethorphan, as side effects on the nervous system may be more frequent or severe.
- Tell your doctor if you change your diet a lot (for example from meat to a vegetarian diet), take large amounts of antacids, or have a severe urinary infection.
- Alzil-M should not be used in pregnancy unless clearly necessary. Women taking Alzil-M should not breast-feed.
- Alzheimer's disease can affect driving. Alzil-M can also have a small effect, so ask your doctor whether it is safe for you to drive or use machines.
