Product information

About Zevona

Zevona contains vonoprazan, a potassium-competitive acid blocker. It reduces the amount of acid made in the stomach by blocking the acid pump in the stomach lining.

Zevona is used in adults to heal erosive oesophagitis (damage to the lining of the food pipe caused by acid) and relieve the heartburn that goes with it, and to keep a healed oesophagus from relapsing.

Zevona is also used to relieve heartburn linked to non-erosive gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and, with antibiotics, to treat Helicobacter pylori infection.

How to use

Take Zevona exactly as your doctor has told you. The dose and the length of treatment depend on the condition being treated.

  1. Healing of erosive oesophagitis: 20 mg once a day for up to 8 weeks.
  2. Keeping healed erosive oesophagitis from coming back: 10 mg once a day, for up to 6 months.
  3. Heartburn linked to non-erosive GERD: 10 mg once a day for 4 weeks.
  4. Helicobacter pylori infection: 20 mg twice a day for 14 days, together with the antibiotics your doctor prescribes.
  5. You can take Zevona with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole.
  6. People with severe kidney or moderate to severe liver problems may need a lower dose. Your doctor will decide.

Zevona is for adults. Do not use it for longer than your doctor tells you.

Side effects and warnings

Like all medicines, Zevona can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. The most common are stomach inflammation (gastritis), diarrhoea, a swollen belly, stomach pain and feeling sick.

  • Do not take Zevona if you are allergic to vonoprazan or any of the other ingredients.
  • Do not take Zevona with medicines that contain rilpivirine (an HIV medicine).
  • Relief of symptoms does not rule out a more serious stomach problem. Tell your doctor if your symptoms do not improve.
  • Tell your doctor straight away if you get severe or lasting diarrhoea, a severe skin rash or blistering, or passing much less urine than usual.
  • Medicines that reduce stomach acid, used for a long time, are linked with a higher risk of bone fractures, low magnesium and low vitamin B12. Use Zevona for the shortest time that works.
  • Tell your doctor about all your medicines before you start, because Zevona can change how some of them work.
  • If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, ask your doctor before taking Zevona.

Always read the patient information leaflet in the pack. If you have any questions, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
