Product information

About Voryn

Voryn contains voriconazole, a broad-spectrum antifungal medicine of the triazole type. It works by blocking an enzyme that fungi need to make ergosterol, an essential part of the fungal cell membrane.

Voryn is used to treat invasive aspergillosis, candidaemia, and serious invasive Candida infections including those resistant to fluconazole. It is also used to treat serious fungal infections caused by Scedosporium and Fusarium species.

Voryn is for adults and children aged 2 years and over, and is mainly used in patients with worsening, possibly life-threatening fungal infections.

How to use

Take Voryn exactly as your doctor has told you, at least one hour before or one hour after a meal. Your doctor will decide the dose and how long your treatment lasts, and will keep it as short as possible.

  1. Adults 40 kg and over: a loading dose of 400 mg (two 200 mg tablets) every 12 hours for the first 24 hours, then 200 mg twice a day. Your doctor may increase this to 300 mg twice a day.
  2. Adults under 40 kg: a loading dose of 200 mg every 12 hours for the first 24 hours, then 100 mg twice a day, which may be increased to 150 mg twice a day.
  3. Mild to moderate liver problems: the usual loading dose, then half the usual maintenance dose.
  4. Children aged 2 to under 12 years: the dose is worked out by body weight by the doctor.

Side effects and warnings

Like all medicines, Voryn can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. Very common side effects include changes in vision, fever, rash, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, headache, swelling of the legs, stomach pain and abnormal liver tests.

  • Voryn can cause changes in vision such as blurred vision. Tell your doctor about any vision changes, and do not drive or use machines if your vision is affected.
  • Avoid strong or direct sunlight while taking Voryn, as it can make your skin sensitive to light. Long-term treatment has been linked to skin cancer.
  • Your doctor will check your liver with blood tests when treatment starts and at least weekly for the first month.
  • Voryn interacts with many other medicines, and some must not be taken with it. Tell your doctor about all the medicines you take, including herbal remedies such as St John's Wort.
  • Voryn must not be used in pregnancy unless your doctor decides the benefit clearly outweighs the risk. Women who could become pregnant must use effective contraception, and breast-feeding must be stopped.
  • Voryn can affect the heart rhythm (QT prolongation) and can rarely cause severe skin reactions. Tell your doctor at once if you develop a skin rash.

Always read the patient information leaflet in the pack. If you have any questions, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
