About Sev-P
Sev-P contains sevelamer hydrochloride, a phosphate binder. It binds phosphate from food in the gut, so less phosphate is taken into the blood.
Sev-P is used to control high levels of phosphate in the blood (hyperphosphataemia) in adults who are on haemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis. It is used as part of a treatment plan that may also include calcium and vitamin D.
Sev-P is for adults. It has not been established in children, or in people with kidney disease who are not yet on dialysis.
How to use
Take Sev-P exactly as your doctor has told you. It is taken three times a day, with meals.
- The usual starting dose is 2.4 g or 4.8 g a day, taken as 1 or 2 tablets of 800 mg with each meal, depending on your blood phosphate level.
- Your doctor will check your blood phosphate and may change the dose every 2 to 3 weeks until it is stable.
- Swallow the tablets whole. Do not crush, chew or break them.
- Follow the diet your doctor or dietitian has given you.
If you miss a dose, skip it and take the next dose with your next meal. Do not take a double dose.

Side effects and warnings
Like all medicines, Sev-P can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. The most common are nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, indigestion, wind, stomach pain and constipation.
- Do not take Sev-P if you are allergic to sevelamer or any of the other ingredients, if your blood phosphate is low, or if you have a blocked bowel.
- Tell your doctor if you have difficulty swallowing, bowel problems, frequent vomiting, active bowel inflammation, or have had major stomach or bowel surgery.
- Constipation can be an early sign of a blocked bowel. Get medical help if you have severe constipation or severe stomach pain.
- Do not take Sev-P at the same time as ciprofloxacin. Some other medicines, such as levothyroxine, ciclosporin, mycophenolate and tacrolimus, may need extra monitoring or a different timing. Ask your doctor or pharmacist.
- Your doctor may check your blood bicarbonate, calcium and vitamin levels while you take Sev-P.
- Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breast-feeding.
Always read the patient information leaflet in the pack. If you have any questions, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
