Product information

About Saybact

Saybact contains cefoperazone and sulbactam. Cefoperazone is a cephalosporin antibiotic. Sulbactam helps it work against bacteria that make enzymes (beta-lactamases) that would otherwise destroy the antibiotic.

Saybact is used to treat infections caused by sensitive bacteria: infections of the respiratory tract and urinary tract, abdominal infections (peritonitis, gallbladder and bile duct infections), septicaemia, meningitis, skin and soft tissue infections, bone and joint infections, and infections of the genital tract, including pelvic inflammatory disease.

Saybact is given by a doctor or nurse, into a vein (IV) or into a muscle (IM).

How to use

Saybact is given by a healthcare professional. The dose depends on the infection, the ratio of cefoperazone to sulbactam in the vial, and how well your kidneys and liver work.

  1. Adults: the usual total dose is 2 to 4 g a day for the 1:1 ratio, and 1.5 to 3 g a day for the 1:2 ratio. It is given in two equal doses, every 12 hours.
  2. For severe or hard-to-treat infections, the dose may be raised to a total of 8 g a day. The maximum dose of sulbactam is 4 g a day.
  3. It is given as a slow injection into a vein (at least 3 minutes), as an infusion (15 to 60 minutes), or into a muscle.
  4. People with severe kidney or liver problems may need a lower dose.

Each vial is for single use. Use the reconstitution steps in the pack insert.

Side effects and warnings

Like all medicines, Saybact can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. The most common are diarrhoea, feeling or being sick, headache, rash, itching, fever, and pain or redness where the injection is given.

  • Do not use Saybact if you are allergic to cefoperazone, sulbactam, cephalosporins, penicillins or other beta-lactam antibiotics.
  • Serious and sometimes fatal allergic reactions can happen. Tell your doctor or nurse straight away if you get a rash, swelling of the face or throat, or trouble breathing.
  • Saybact can cause bleeding. Tell your doctor if you bleed or bruise easily, take blood thinners, or have poor nutrition or liver disease.
  • Do not drink alcohol while you are being treated and for 5 days afterwards. It can cause flushing, sweating, headache and a fast heartbeat.
  • Severe or lasting diarrhoea can be a sign of bowel inflammation (colitis). Tell your doctor.
  • Saybact should only be used in pregnancy if clearly needed. Ask your doctor before using Saybact if you are pregnant or breast-feeding.

Always read the patient information leaflet in the pack. If you have any questions, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
