About C-Pime
C-Pime contains cefepime, a cephalosporin antibiotic. It kills bacteria by stopping them from building their cell walls.
C-Pime is used to treat infections caused by bacteria that are sensitive to cefepime: lower respiratory tract infections (including pneumonia), urinary tract infections (including kidney infection), skin and soft tissue infections, abdominal infections, gynaecological infections, and bacteria in the blood linked to these infections.
In children it is also used for bacterial meningitis, and in people with a low white cell count it is used to treat fever that is thought to be caused by bacteria.
C-Pime is given by a doctor or nurse, into a vein (IV) or into a muscle (IM).
How to use
C-Pime is given by a healthcare professional. The dose depends on the infection, how severe it is, your weight and how well your kidneys work.
- Adults and children over 40 kg, mild to moderate urinary tract infection: 500 mg to 1 g every 12 hours, into a vein or a muscle.
- Other mild to moderate infections: 1 g every 12 hours. Severe infections: 2 g every 12 hours into a vein. Very severe or life-threatening infections: 2 g every 8 hours into a vein.
- Treatment usually lasts 7 to 10 days. For fever in low white cell count, treatment lasts at least 7 days or until the white cell count recovers.
- People with kidney problems need a lower dose. Children under 40 kg are given a dose based on body weight.
Each vial is for single use. Use the diluent (if provided) and the reconstitution steps in the pack insert.

Side effects and warnings
Like all medicines, C-Pime can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. The most common are diarrhoea, skin rash, and pain or redness where the injection is given.
- Do not use C-Pime if you are allergic to cefepime, other cephalosporins, or have had a severe allergic reaction to penicillins or other beta-lactam antibiotics.
- Severe allergic reactions can happen. Tell your doctor or nurse straight away if you get a rash, swelling of the face or throat, or trouble breathing.
- Severe or lasting diarrhoea can be a sign of bowel inflammation (colitis). Tell your doctor and do not take medicines that stop diarrhoea.
- In people with kidney problems, high doses can cause confusion, jerking movements or fits. Tell your doctor if you have kidney problems.
- C-Pime can cause a false-positive result in some urine sugar tests.
- If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, ask your doctor before using C-Pime.
- C-Pime can cause confusion, dizziness or hallucinations in some people. Do not drive or use machines if this happens.
Always read the patient information leaflet in the pack. If you have any questions, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
