Product information

About Bevilol

Bevilol contains nebivolol, a beta-blocker that slows the heart and relaxes the blood vessels. It lowers blood pressure and reduces the workload of the heart.

Bevilol is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults, and as an add-on to standard treatment for stable mild to moderate chronic heart failure in patients aged 70 years or over.

Bevilol comes as 2.5 mg and 5 mg tablets. It should only be used as advised by a doctor.

How to use

Take Bevilol exactly as your doctor has told you. It is taken once a day, at the same time each day, with or without food.

  1. High blood pressure: the usual dose is one 5 mg tablet once a day.
  2. Your doctor may start with 2.5 mg a day if you have kidney problems or are over 65 years old.
  3. Heart failure: treatment is started at a very low dose and increased slowly by your doctor over several weeks, to a maximum of 10 mg once a day.
  4. Swallow the tablet with water. Bevilol is not recommended for children.

Do not stop taking Bevilol suddenly. Your doctor will lower the dose gradually over 1 to 2 weeks.

Side effects and warnings

Like all medicines, Bevilol can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. The most common are headache, dizziness, tiredness, tingling or numbness, diarrhoea, constipation and swollen ankles.

  • Do not take Bevilol if you are allergic to nebivolol or any of the other ingredients.
  • Do not take Bevilol if you have a very slow heartbeat, very low blood pressure, severe heart failure needing intravenous treatment, serious circulation problems in the arms or legs, asthma or wheezing, or liver problems.
  • Tell your doctor if you have diabetes, an overactive thyroid, psoriasis or a history of allergic reactions. Bevilol can hide the warning signs of low blood sugar.
  • Tell your doctor about all other medicines you take, especially other blood pressure or heart medicines, and tell the anaesthetist if you are having an operation.
  • If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, ask your doctor before taking Bevilol. Your dizziness may affect driving and using machines.

Always read the patient information leaflet in the pack. If you have any questions, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
